Pictures from the Apocalypse

The Book of Revelation presents vast sweeps of history in a series of pictorial imaginations. But it makes great demands on the reader. To understand it fully it is necessary to extend one's comprehension to include the heavenly. How can we relate this mighty cosmic panorama to our own lives? How can we make it our own?

Evelyn Capel shows that the pictures of the Apocalypse are not to be understood by intellectual explanations but by 'the ability to form pictures in one's own mind and to let them unfold themselves in one's thinking ... the artistic faculty of the mind has to be called upon to the point of allowing the thoughts to live in the visions themselves.'

Evelyn Capel studied history at Oxford. She was later ordained as a priest of the Christian Community—a movement for religious renewal.
