Elizabeth M. Grunelius was a Froebel-trained kindergarten teacher who worked closely with Rudolf Steiner in the early 1920s to establish the foundations of Waldorf early childhood education and helped open the first Waldorf kindergarten in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1926. She detailed this framework in her influential work, Early Childhood Education and the Waldorf School Plan.

Core Concepts of Grunelius’s Waldorf Plan

• Unstructured and Home-Like Environment: The plan proposes a relaxed, domestic-style space that mimics a home rather than a rigid academic classroom.
• Learning Through Imitation and Example: Young children (ages birth to 7) are guided by "will forces" and learn naturally by observing and imitating the meaningful, purposeful daily activities of adults.
• Creative and Imaginative Play: The environment avoids premature intellectualization, focusing instead on free, open-ended play, simple natural toys (like wood, silk, and shells), and hands-on practical tasks.
• Rhythm and Predictability: Daily, weekly, and seasonal rhythms—such as baking, painting, gardening, and storytelling—provide a secure and comforting structure for young children.
• Steiner’s Guidance to Grunelius: Rudolf Steiner famously advised early childhood educators through principles like: "Observe the children. Actively meditate. Follow your intuitions. Work so that all your actions are worthy of imitation."
